India cancels visas issued to the Chinese due to Coronavirus scare

The Coronavirus outbreak in China has so far claimed upwards of 425 lives in China. To prevent the Coronavirus from entering India, New Delhi has cancelled all Visas issued to Chinese nationals.

The Indian Embassy in Beijing posted on Twitter that Visas issued to Chinese nationals were no longer valid. The Embassy also said that it had been receiving several inquiries from Chinese and other foreign nationals based in China on the validity of their visas for travel to India. The Embassy clarified that all single and multiple-entry visas stand issued to people in China stand cancelled.

China reported another 64 deaths in the Hubei province on Monday. China reported 3,235 new cases of Coronavirus infection with the total rising to 20,438 across China.

The Indian Govt. has advised Chinese citizens to contact the Indian Embassy in Beijing or the Indian Consulates in Shanghai or Guangzhou to apply for a “fresh” visa to travel to India.

The Indian Embassy in Beijing also tweeted that Chinese travellers who are already in India or who have come to India after 15^th January should contact the hotline number of the Health and Family Welfare Ministry.

With India cancelling existing Chinese visas, China would not be participating in the biannual military exposition Def-Expo 2020 to be held in Lucknow.

India had decided to earmark aerobridges at certain gates at the international airports. Such aerobridges would be available at New Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai, Hyderabad, Cochin and Bengaluru. This will help screen passengers arriving from China, Thailand, Singapore and Hong Kong for possible Coronavirus infection.

The Tourism Ministry of India would also co-ordinate with hotel associations in India for wider self-reporting of suspected Coronavirus infection. Neighbouring countries like Nepal have also increased the awareness and surveillance for suspected Coronavirus cases.

India has screened more than 89,500 travellers in 21 airports. 534 suspected cases of Coronavirus were tested on 4^th February; out of which three tested positive. India has also put 3,935 tourists on community surveillance for effective prevention of the outbreak.

India has so far evacuated 647 Indian nationals from Wuhan in the Hubei province of China.
