Australia to allow citizens to return from India from May 15

In a recent Press Conference, the Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison has stated that “it was likely the Commonwealth Government would not be resuming direct commercial flights from India”.

However, the states and territories in Australia have been invited to “participate in receiving additional repatriation flights, facilitated commercial flights, into their states”.

The repatriation flights, also referred to as facilitated commercial flights, have been run by the Australian government for a considerable period of time. Around 20,000 individuals have been assisted to return to Australia through such flights so far.

On April 27, 2021, Australia suspended – in view of the COVID-19 situation in India – all direct passenger flights from India until May 15.   On May 7, 2021, the Australian PM has said that Australia will be chartering three repatriation flights from India between May 15 and May 31. The first flight will be touching down into Darwin on May 15.   Direct commercial flights from India, on the other hand, still remain banned.

Further arrangements are to confirmed, over the course of the next week, with the Australian states and territories to increase the amount of repatriation and facilitated commercial flights.

As per PM Morrison, such chartered flights will be “focused on bringing those Australian citizens, residents and families who have been registered with our High Commission and consular offices within India”.

900 of the most vulnerable of such a group will be especially targeted.

As per the official statistics, currently there were approximately 9,000 Australians in India that wanted to return to Australia.
